A very heartfelt hat-tip to Shanghaiist for posting that CCTV 9 may be facing some competition in the English-language news arena. This is from Reuters:
Shanghai Media Group, China's second-largest media group by revenue, plans to launch a 24-hour English TV news channel in China this year as it seeks to expand to reach a global audience.Shanghai Media has been in talks with regulators in charge of the media and culture sectors for at least one year and is likely to win approval for launching the new channel by the end of the year, government and industry sources familar with the situation said.
Shanghai Media's plan has already won strong support from the Shanghai city government, which owns the firm, and is now subject to approval from top regulators in Beijing, they said.
China Media News remembers working at CCTV 9 in the summer of 2005, and hearing rumors then that SMG was planning to pull together many of its English language programs as a basis for a 24-hour English channel under Dragon TV. We reported earlier that SMG is now hiring many English-language copy editors, and now the Reuters report mentions that the station is hiring reporters and presenters as well.

Sexy Beijing, a series of short videos produced by Goldmines Film, has proven popular since they were launched in 2006. In fact, Sexy Beijing was featured on CNN's website earlier this year.
Unfortunately for fans of the video shorts, it appears Anna Sophie Loewenberg, the host, has had a disagreement with media blog Danwei and has left the company. It's unclear whether she will continue cooperating with Luke Mines, the producer of the Sexy Beijing series, independently of Danwei.

Shanghai's 87.9 FM, which is owned by China Radio International, is set to see a decrease in the number of shows being produced from Beijing.
For years, many programs, such as the morning drive show featuring Felix and Yuzhou, China Drive AM and PM, and learning shows were simulcast on CRI EasyFM stations throughout China. But that's about to change.
China Media News has learned that advertisers in Shanghai are finding it difficult to sell English-language programs. They have been given increased control over programming decisions, and want more Shanghai-centric programs in Chinese.
China Media News understands that China's largest and most dynamic market would require more tailor-made programming. However the result is that many popular programs will be pulled off the air, alienating loyal listeners. In fact, these shows, including the Learning Pub, and the Pulse (which replaced Joy FM) were pulled in March. Felix and Yuzhou's show and China Drive PM were the only ones returned after massive listener complaints.
The only show that will remain in Shanghai will be Yuzhou and Felix's morning music show. The change will occur within the next two weeks. CRI staff in Beijing have been instructed not to mention the move on air, and a phone number has been set up for listener complaints.

Most people in China associate English-language television here with CCTV 9 -- but there are other options. China Media News once worked at Guangzhou Television, which runs the city's Guangzhou English Channel. The GZEC is only the second all-English channel in China, following CCTV 9, and the first regional all-English channel.
Shanghai Media Group (SMG) also runs several English-language programs on Dragon TV. SMG's programs are also international, as the station has strong cooperation in Southeast and Northeast Asia and the Americas.
It has been rumored for several years that SMG has wanted an all-English channel of its own, but is continually rebuffed by the State Administration of Radio, Film, and Television. SARFT is known for its loyalty to China Central Television, which fears an all-English competitor. China Media News can not confirm these rumors, but can confirm that SMG does quality programming from a beautiful, modern building in downtown Shanghai. For those interested in working there as a copy editor, the following job will be of great interest:
Responsibilities:
Shanghai Media Group is looking for seasoned, talented native speakers of English with proven television news or feature writing skills, sharp headline writing and can-do attitude. The Copy Editor will be required to do quick write ups on key news or feature stories from reporters, press releases, wire services and other sources for television news broadcasting, ability to be both fast and accurate a must. Responsibilities will also include generating story ideas, contributing to special features, determining style and editing copy to meet established tone and theme requirements for SMG broadcast. Duties could expand based on growth of organizations.
Desired:
Strong news judgment.
Excellent writing and organizational skills.
Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
3 years'experience in writing, reporting, producing and/or copy editing in international English-language television organizations a plus.
You can apply by going here.
China Media News reported earlier that China Radio International news host Joe Edwards had been relieved of his duties prior to the end of his three month probationary period.
Edwards, known for his baritone voice and his DJ experience in Canada, arrived in China several months ago looking for a new challenge. Unfortunately, his move from being a music jock to a CRI news host didn't go well.
Edwards, however, has found another fresh start with Beijing Talk magazine, the northern outpost of the Talk magazine chain, which also includes Shanghai Talk, South City Talk, and Macao Talk, among others.
China Media News wishes him continued success.
