Job Posting: AmCham in Shanghai seeks Managing Editor
The American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai has a vacancy for an experienced Managing Editor to join the Communications and Publications Team. The Communications Unit is responsible for the corporate communications and public affairs activities of the Chamber including: media relations management, issues management, production of a suite of corporate publications, preparation of research reports and briefing material, preparation of communication plans and publicity material and management of the AmCham Shanghai website. The position reports to the Director, Communications and Publications.
The Managing Editor position manages, oversees and undertakes editorial, design and production processes across the publishing program, including the flagship magazine, Insight. Ideally you will be a native speaker of English and have at least three years experience writing, editing and managing publications in a corporate communications team or an English language business publication.
Duties:
1. Manage the editing, design and publication of texts for the Chamber.
2. Provide oversight of editorial services and undertake editorial tasks, encompassing commissioning, writing, substantive and copy editing, proof reading and index preparation.
3. Develop, implement and review quality standards for writing, editorial, design and publishing services.
4. In consultation the Director, develop design briefs for publications.
5. Manage contracts for design and publication work.
6. Manage project schedules, budgets and preparation of publicity material for publications and marketing activities.
7. Commission and manage a team of freelance journalists, photographers, translators, illustrators and designers.
8. Any other duties as directed by the Director, Communications and Publications.
SELECTION CRITERIA
1. High level of competence and experience in business writing, editing and publishing - print and electronic.
2. Demonstrated ability to edit material for publication and display, in variety of forms and the ability to achieve a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
3. High level of project management skills including proven ability to develop and maintain publishing schedules, manage multiple projects and contracts within budget and fixed deadlines, and supervise contract and in-house writers, designers and printers.
4. Excellent interpersonal skills, outstanding written communication skills and high level oral communication, liaison and negotiation skills.
5. Proven capacity to work effectively (both independently and cooperatively) in a team of multi-skilled communication professionals.
6. Up-to-date, detailed understanding of Chinese current affairs and China business issues as they relate to American business; understanding of U.S.-China relations and policy issues a plus.
7. Must show initiative, enthusiasm, flexibility, resourcefulness and capacity to think creatively.
8. Willingness to contribute to the work of the Team and the Chamber and work under pressure in an organized way to meet deadlines.
9. Native English speaker is essential; Chinese language ability would be a plus.
10. Degree in business, economics, communications, journalism or relevant discipline. Relevant work experience in a publishing environment.
11. Advanced skills in design software packages specifically: InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat would be highly regarded.
